"Tiber is the result of AMCC's alliance with Cisco announced in April 2001," said John LoMedico, vice president of marketing, framer products, at AMCC. "RPR is gaining acceptance among carriers and through this alliance we are further accelerating its availability. Premiering Tiber not only further demonstrates AMCC's commitment to RPR, but significantly compliments our existing portfolio to provide a complete solution for the metro market." "We are glad to see this level of integration work being done with SRP, as this integration will make it easier for vendors to create a broader range of RPR products. AMCC's Tiber is a clear example of world class support for SRP in a single device," said Roland Acra, group vice president, Internet Routing Group at Cisco Systems. "The combination of intellectual property from AMCC and Cisco allows customers to easily adopt SRP and benefit from more bandwidth efficient services with carrier class reliability." Tiber provides OC-48 transceivers with Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) to interface directly with optics modules. OC-48c SONET/SDH overhead processors are provided for full-duplex operation of mapping/demapping of SRP packets within the SONET/SDH payload. The packets are mapped using byte synchronous HDLC frame delineation and transparency processing. "RPR introduces a simple, bandwidth efficient, cost effective and robust technique to data networks," said Amit Banerjee, director of marketing, framer products, at AMCC. "Systems using Tiber can operate in SRP mode or support regular POS mode for IP traffic for SONET rings. AMCC actively participates in the IEEE 802.17 standards committee and will work with customers to provide standards compliant solutions when the standard arrives." The built-in OC-48 transceivers with clock and data recovery (CDR) provides a direct interface to the two OC-48 optics modules. Tiber offers full section, line and path overhead processing on both the transmit and receive sides, while supporting framing, scrambling/descrambling, alarm-signal insertion/detection and bit-interleaved processing for terminating and sourcing the SONET/SDH frames and mapping/demapping of SRP packets in the SONET/SDH payload. Two complete SRP MAC-layer processors are included in the device. A dedicated embedded micro sequencer controls the SRP Fairness Algorithm for each RAC. A Transit Buffer (SSRAM) interface, provided for each RAC, provides support for up to 9 MB of packet storage in each direction. Tiber communicates with the host via two Flexbus(TM)-3/SPI-3 interfaces, each with three transmit FIFOs (Control, High, Low) and one receive FIFO. Transmit packets are muxed into the associated RAC processor on a strict priority basis with priority backpressure from the RAC processor. On ring wraps, transmit data packets from both Flexbus-3/SPI-3 interfaces are sent to the active RAC processor. Control packets are always sent to their associated ring. Tiber can also be configured (with the RAC processor in transparent mode) for mapping PoS packets directly into an SONET STS48C SPE or SDH VC-4-16c. In this mode, Tiber provides provision and status registers to support SONET/SDH compliant APS. Pricing and Availability Tiber will be sampling to develop partners in April 2002. Pricing available upon request. About AMCC AMCC designs, develops, manufactures and markets high-performance, high-bandwidth silicon solutions empowering intelligent optical networks.
